If you liked the movie “A Night at the Museum” you will probably love the Junior League of Greater Covington’s third annual fundraising gala to benefit the Children’s Museum of St. Tammany, which will be held on Sunday, March 7, 2010, from 6-10 pm at the Castine Center in Mandeville. The event is entitled “A Celebration of Exploration...A Night for the Museum”.

Last year’s fundraiser was an enormous success, and if early ticket sales are any indication, this year’s event will surpass that record. General admission tickets are only $100 per person. If you would like to reserve a table for eight, the cost is only $1,200. All ticket sales are tax deductible. Tickets can be purchased at Playville in Mandeville and Covington, Huntington Learning Center in Mandeville and The Purple Armadillo in Slidell or online at www.jlgc.net

If the event is not sold out, tickets will be available at the door. This year’s Honorary Chair is Channel 6 News Meteorologist, Margaret Orr.

Children’s Museum chairperson Lisa Barnett feels that, "The Museum effort has gained tremendous momentum this year. The Koop Drive road extension is expected to be completed later this spring and the re-routing of the Tammany Trace has also begun.  An Exhibit Design Search has begun with a selection of a firm to take place by late April.  Fundraising efforts continue to be positive and we are very proud and honored by the outpouring of community support for this project.  We know that the community truly understands the impact that the Children's Museum will have on our children's quality of life in St. Tammany and their involvement and support are critical elements to its success.”

Upon completion, the 22,000 square foot Children’s Museum of St. Tammany will provide a learning environment that will serve the needs and interests of local and regional children, families and schools by providing exhibits and programs that stimulate curiosity and imagination, in addition to nurturing a desire for life-long learning. The concept of the Children’s Museum of St. Tammany is to create a dramatic, hands-on learning environment that serves the developmental needs and cognitive interests of children, families, and schools.”

The delicious menu items feature:  raw oysters on the half shell, crab cakes, shrimp alfredo, crawfish & shrimp mini-wontons, penne pasta Lafayette, sushi rolls, large assortment of pastries, chicken andouille gumbo, and many more scrumptious dishes. There will be many tables that will feature auction items that range from sports memorabilia, restaurant and hotel packages, art from local artists, flat screen television, professional bike, Miniature Dachshund, Kennedy Space Center Space Pass and Astronaut Training Experience with a 4 Night Stay and Airfare for 2, and many, many more too numerous to mention.

There will also be an Exploration Destination "Winner's Choice" Raffle where the winner has a choice of:  Nickelodeon Family Suites - Orlando, 4 Night package with Airfare; Napa Wine Country Insiders Tour - 3 night package with Airfare; OR the Late Show with David Letterman in NYC, 3 Night Stay and Airfare. There will be a Exploration Key Raffle that will only sold at the Celebration and will include:  Sports Fan Getaway - Choose your Favorite MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, PGA or College Bowl Game with 2 night weekend stay and airfare for two.

The always-popular Diamond dig will be back. For only $25 per chance, participants will have the opportunity to dig for prizes that include half-carat diamonds and other semi precious stones. As always there will be an "Artisan at Work" during the celebration. This year’s student artist is Sarah Jones. Jones is a sophomore at Lakeshore High School and studies visual arts at NOCCA. Jones’ art will be completed at the Celebration and auctioned off that evening in the Live Auction. Music will include an opening performance by Northshore Philarmonia (a middle school youth orchestra). The featured act will be the music of Four Unplugged. Assisting Barnett is Celebration Chairman Tony LeMon.  For more information on the event or tickets, please email celebrationtickets@bellsouth.net or visit www.jlgc.net
