A BENEFIT FOR THE SMH CANCER CENTER

Slidell Memorial Hospital Foundation and Capital One Bank are pleased to present A Big New Year’s Happening on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the SMH Founders Building, 1150 Robert Boulevard in Slidell.

SMH Cancer Center will feature popular New Orleans band Big Sam’s Funky Nation, winner of the 2008 Big Easy Awards for Best Funk Group.  Band leader Sammie "Big Sam" Williams was recently awarded an arts fellowship by the Louisiana Division of the Arts, an extremely prestigious award.  Artist Fellowships are grant awards in recognition of artistic excellence, recognizing the achievements of exceptional individual artists living, working and contributing to Louisiana's cultural economy.

Big Sam’s Funky Nation is led by trombone powerhouse, Big Sam Williams, formerly the trombonist for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, who the San Francisco Chronicle calls “the top man on the slide trombone in the birthplace of jazz.” Combining his distinctive trombone riffs with a call-and-response MC style, Big Sam refuses to let the audience sit still. Between the band’s solos and his trombone riffs, Big Sam second-lines (a uniquely New Orleans style of street-dance) and gets the crowd going.

A Big New Year’s Happening promises to be a major event to welcome in 2010.  Patton’s Catering will provide an array of late-night bites for hungry revelers, while open bars will satisfy the thirsty.  Old New Orleans Rum is a major sponsor and will create specialty cocktails with their three award-winning rums.  There will be a number of wines and champagnes to sample, as well as beer and a full bar.

Guests looking for some New Year purchases will enjoy the Silent Auction featuring items from Mignon Faget, Ltd.; artists James Michalopoulos, Skylar Fein, Adam Sambola, Kelly Landrum Hammell, Annie Strack, Phil Galatas and more.
