Funding will benefit sustainable energy center.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., today announced that Tulane University has been awarded $3 million from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Fund. The grant will be used to help construct the River Turbine Laboratory at the Tulane University RiverSphere Center for Excellence.

“Tulane’s RiverSphere is a wonderful example of Louisiana’s leadership in the energy sector,” said Sen. Landrieu. “Capitalizing on one of our region’s natural resources -- the Mississippi River -- this center will foster energy entrepreneurialism and help bring businesses back to downtown New Orleans.”

Tulane’s RiverSphere will focus on water sustainability and renewable energy, specifically through hydrokinetic energy systems. It will be used for research, education, exhibitions and as a business incubator. Through this demonstration site, the center will also be used by private companies as a testing site for river turbine prototypes.

Located on the Robin Street Warf in downtown New Orleans, the project will create green jobs and bring significant private sector investment to the region.
