The Slidell Memorial Hospital (SMH) Cancer Resource Center offers support groups, programs, education and screenings for patients undergoing treatment for cancer and cancer survivors. This month, as a community service of the hospital’s Cancer Program, SMH offers Look Good, Feel Better, a health and beauty session for women before, during and after cancer treatment, and free skin cancer screenings. Both events take place May 10. Also, the Cancer Resource Center offers:
YOGA classes for Cancer Patients & Caregivers
Staying active during cancer treatment can substantially improve a patient's sense of physical well-being. Registration and medical release are required for this free class, designed specifically for cancer patients and their caregivers. The 8-week session began April 14. Look Good, Feel Better
Look Good, Feel Better is a health and beauty session for women before, during or after cancer treatment, teaching you how to deal with skin and hair side effects caused by cancer treatment. Lunch and learn with a licensed cosmetologist and the support of women with similar circumstances. Free make-up kit included. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Life with Cancer
SMH hosts this support group for those living with cancer on the first Wednesday of every month.

Breast Cancer Support Group
This program offers support and information for breast cancer survivors, patients and caregivers on the third Wednesday of each month.

Free Skin Cancer Screening
Skin cancer is the most prevalent type of all cancers, affecting one in five Americans in the course of a lifetime. To educate the community about prevention and early detection of the disease, SMH and Dermatologists Elizabeth McBurney, MD, and Deborah Hilton, MD, offer free screenings for melanoma and other types of skin cancer to the community. $50 Digital Mammograms
For the month of May, MD Imaging is offering digital screening mammograms with Radiologist interpretation and DEXA bone density scans for a special $50 rate each.
Digital Mammography is the most advanced technology available for mammography imaging. Radiologists are able to zoom-in, magnify and individually optimize each image during interpretation to reduce repeats and recalls. Offer is good for screening mammograms only. ABOUT SMH CANCER RESOURCE CENTER
Teaching cancer patients about the disease process is a vital part of continuum of care. The Cancer Resource Center offers a patient education library, instruction in breast self-exam, wigs and other head gear, and an Appearance Center. Patient, family, individual and group education is also provided for post-operative patients, as well as those with advanced disease.
