The Hammond Chamber of Commerce will welcome Hammond High School’s Robotics Team #2080 to the 2010 Community and Business EXPO on April 29th at Southeastern’s University Center. From 5-7 p.m., Hammond Robotics, led by Shelly Gaydos and Fred Epperson, will be sharing the FIRST program by kicking off their area tour at EXPO demonstrating the 2010 H-04 robot for all attendees. Gaydos and her drive team recently competed in Westwego, LA and finished 2nd overall as well as received the Motorola Quality Award at the competition.
FIRST was founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology. Based in Manchester, NH, the not-for-profit public charity designs innovative programs that motivate and inspire young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.
“In addition, starting June 21-25, we will be offering ‘Extreme Science,’ a summer camp for kids ages 9-14 from 1-4:30 p.m. to build science awareness to the children of our community,” said Gaydos. “This will also be a fundraiser for the team to continue to travel and compete.” Applications and information for the camp will be available at EXPO.
Shelly Gaydos is a life-long resident of Hammond, has been a math and physics teacher at Hammond High School for the past 18 years. She has BS in Science and a Master’s in Educational Leadership. Gaydos received the 2003 Tangipahoa Parish Teacher of the Year and the 2004 Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year. In just 4 years, the Robotics Team finished as the highest ranking Louisiana robot for three years. Shelly’s goal is to bring the vision of First (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) to the community.
“I hope everyone makes it a point to come out and support the Business EXPO this year not only see the phenomenal talent we are so fortunate to have come to our community, but to see what our community business have to offer,” said Chamber Specialist, Tiffany Butler.
