WASHINGTON – United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., today made the following statement about President Obama’s nomination of Elena Kagan to succeed Justice John Paul Stevens on the United States Supreme Court. If confirmed, Kagan would become the fourth woman to serve on the nation’s highest court.
Since March 2009, Kagan has served as the Solicitor General of the United States. In that role, she is tasked to conduct all litigation on behalf of the United States before the Supreme Court.
        Sen. Landrieu said:
“Elena Kagan is an impressive choice to be the next justice on our nation’s highest court.  From clerking for Thurgood Marshall to becoming the first woman to serve as dean of Harvard Law School to her selection as the first female Solicitor General, Kagan has built an outstanding career as a legal scholar and trailblazer for other women in the field.  I look forward to learning more about her and her legal experience through the confirmation process.”
